Congratulations, Kristy and Holt!

I am back from Indiana, where we married off Kristy and Holt. It was a delightful affair, and I am honored to have been asked to preserve this most special of days. I am sorting through hundreds of beautiful photographs, but I put together a short slideshow of the first half of the wedding as a preview of coming attractions. Enjoy!

My wife, the therapist

My dear wife, mother of my children, life partner, and person to call in case of an emergency has become a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of California (don’t you dare pronounce that like our governor does!). We have put together a little website to introduce what she does at doreenmaller.com and she’s listed on the Psychology Today website, as well.

Please keep her in mind if you or anybody you know is searching for a very talented therapist.

In America’s Heartland

My old pal Holt met a girl named Kristy. It’s an old-fashioned fairy tale, and tomorrow it plays out on the stage of tradition here in a small town in northern Indiana. I am flattered and thrilled that the kids asked me to come here this weekend and photograph their wedding. Kristy grew up here in Michigan City and her family still lives here. Holt comes from a family of cattle people in Texas. The two of them met and are living in Atlanta now. But despite the geographic challenges and $4.00-a-gallon gasoline, many friends and family have gathered to witness their wedding. As have I. I can’t wait!

Preggers, May edition

Having a fun fashion shoot with a couple of super mom-to-be models today. My job rocks! :-)

Movers and Shakers

Tonight I was the official photographer for a small political gathering in honor of Nancy Pelosi.

This photograph features Mrs. Pelosi and Gavin Newsom, the Mayor of San Francisco. Next to Mrs. Pelosi is Jennifer Siebel (Mayor Newsom’s fiancée), and John Burton, a long-time member of the San Francisco political elite.

Although very well-known in national circles now as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Pelosi is also the representative for California’s 8th congressional district, which covers most of the City and County of San Francisco. The 8th district is one of the most reliably Democratic districts in the country, though progressive third parties like the Green Party often poll well in the district. It is geographically the smallest congressional district in the nation outside of New York City. [source: Wikipedia]

My neighbor

My new studio is working out brilliantly. I love the space. Despite the fact that I’ve been orphaned by my regular assistant (who’s moving to Dallas!) and I’ve still got lots of boxes to unpack, it really feels like home. I finally have room to stretch out, both physically and artistically.

But one of the most unexpected pleasures of my new digs is my neighbor Albert. He’s also my landlord. And he’s is one of the most amusing and interesting characters I’ve met in a long time. Aside from being a very accomplished sculptor, he is also an avid and successful antique car collector. It’s a never-ending source of amusement to me that every few days, I’ll pop out of my cave for some fresh air and there will be the most magnificent hunk of steel, chrome and glass that I have ever seen.

One random evening a few weeks back was no exception. Albert was working a deal with a guy from Dubai to sell him a couple of Albert’s cars. One of them was this breathtakingly beautiful 1950’s Cadillac Fleetwood limo. Suffice it to say they don’t make ’em like this anymore.

By the way, that’s my studio’s roll-up door to the right of this photo. I literally almost crashed into this Caddy when I walked out of my door!

Spring has sprung

I do not fancy myself a still life photographer, as my primary line of work is people photography. But our garden is blooming all over the place, and I knew I’d have a quiet morning at home today, so I brought home some gear. Our back fence has a mixture of little tea roses (which are prolific climbers) and regular roses (which are planted in the dirt). Today’s morning light, combined with the remnants of the thrice-weekly showering by our sprinklers, made for a nice tableau.

Anyway, happy spring from Burlingame, California!
